Since 2015, Operation Blended Warrior (OBW) was an exercise that showcased Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) adoption and the power of collaboration between industry and military leaders looking to implement training programs at the services level. At I/ITSEC 2017, it was announced OBW will transition from an annual occurrence to a year-round effort to explore the effects and benefits of LVC training programs. Since the program’s inception, important discoveries have been made about military training and how LVC figures into the molding of tomorrow’s warfighter.
Named “Best Paper” at IITSEC 2017, Performance Measurement in LVC Distributed Simulations: Lessons from OBW takes a closer look at the exercises and what experts can glean beyond the ability to train warfighters at a lower price point, specifically around training efficacy.
The whitepaper is authored by Jaclyn Hoke, Ph.D., Principal Engineer in the Rockwell Collins Advanced Technology Center, Lisa Townsend, Research Psychologist at the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD), Human Integration and Performance Division, Applied Training Research branch, Sam Giambarberee, Computer Engineer at NAWCTSD, Advanced Simulation Division, Technology Development and Integration branch, and Sae Schatz, Ph.D., the director of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative.
The paper looks at four primary areas of interest for OBW:
- Cost analysis
- Network performance
- Trainee performance
- Whether OBW met the expectations of participating organizations.
It also establishes Measures of Effectiveness (MoEs), Measures of Performance (MoPs), and recommendations based on these findings for future OBW events.
