Military simulation and training technology has come a long way and demonstrated numerous benefits, many of which we’ve written about here on Modern Military Training. After talking to so many experts in the field, we expect to see additional developments in the areas of integration and security in simulation and training technology, and expect that these will boost training effectiveness even more. It made us wonder if there are other areas that need to be addressed before we will begin to see more widespread adoption of military simulation and training.
We recently spoke with Professor Frank Cardullo, professor of mechanical engineering at Binghamton University’s Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, about trends in training and how users should address training effectiveness. Cardullo says that in order to really move the needle on training effectiveness, more academic research into modeling the human in the simulated environment needs to be done. His lab is actively researching this, as well as modeling humans in a real environment and then comparing the two scenarios to gauge what level of simulation really is needed in a complex flight and training environment.
